Latin I CEC MS


In order to gain mastery of the material, students are expected to study for about one half-hour on the days that they do not meet for class. Students should always begin their out of class study with some kind of review: recitation, flashcards, oral drill, or written drill. They should then translate their assigned exercises and, when finished, correct them. Regular, frequent, and attentive review is essential for the mastery of Latin!

I. Required Materials

Texts:

  1. First Form Latin (Memoria Press, $28.50 for workbook and textbook) (ISBN:978-1615380022)

Other Materials:

  1. 1 medium-sized three-ring binder dedicated to this course
  2. 1 ream of loose-leaf, college-ruled paper
  3. Pens, both blue/black and red, and pencils
  4. An ample supply of flashcards and a box or pouch to contain them

II. Course Binders

All items should be dated and presented in chronological order within the appropriate section of the course binder.  Each student’s binder should have the categories enumerated below.  Please ask Ms Black after class if there is confusion over where to place any given item in your binder.  Remember that binders checked regularly throughout the semester, and collected and graded at the end of each quarter.  Ample warning will be given before the binder is collected, but an organized, methodical binder is an expectation throughout the semester, since it reflects the student’s organized, methodical approach to learning in general.

Organizing Your Binder

Label the front of the binder with the title of the class, the year, and the instructor’s name.  Each of the follow capital letters represents a labeled divider within the three-ring binder. The Arabic numerals below each capital letter represent the order in which that content should be presented. All material should appear in chronological order within its designated section.

  3. Warm-ups: A master list of quotations, poems, and any other class warm-ups
  4. Grammar Notes
  5. Master List of Vocabulary
  6. In-Class assignments: written drills, Latin sentences, etc.
  7. Tests/Quizzes

III. Course Requirements:

Attendance and Participation: All students are expected to attend class unless legitimately excused. If a student must miss a class, he or she has two school days to complete all work assigned on the day which the student missed in addition to all other class work. It is the student’s responsibility to ask what warm-up he has missed during his absence. Both perfect attendance and good preparation are critical to success in this course.  

Upon entering the classroom, all students are expected first to sit in their assigned seat, next to set out their completed homework on their desk, and finally to begin copying both their assignment and the daily warm-up from the board.  Ms. Black will begin classroom procedures at the appropriate time. There is no bell.

Binder Checks: There are at least four binder checks per semester, a total of eight in the course of the class.

Tests and Quizzes: Assessments are a regular part of this course. Tests will always be worth more than quizzes. While individual accommodations may be made, students should understand that the allotted time for a test or quiz is as much a part of the assessment as the content of the questions.

IV. Grading Procedures: Grades will be calculated according to the following weights:

  1. Homework (40%): Homework will be assigned every class period and checked at the beginning of the following class period. Students will not receive credit for incomplete or sloppily executed assignments. Homework is graded as “full credit,” “half credit, or “no credit”.
  2. Assessments (60%): Latin grammar and translation quizzes will happen weekly. Tests will happen when the teacher determines, but there will be at least three tests each semester. Students will have fair warning (at least a week) before a test.

V. Expectation of Virtue:

Students are encouraged to study together and to discuss what they are learning. It is expected that students will give and receive help and advice from each other. However, this cooperation should never involve one student having possession of a copy of all or part of work done by someone else in any form. During quizzes and tests students are expected to conduct themselves honorably. Talking or discussion is not permitted during any assessment, nor may you collaborate in any way. Any violation of these expectations will result in both academic and disciplinary consequences.

Tuesday, September 1: Memorize the 1st Conjugation present tense endings and the vocabulary in Lesson 1 of the First Form Student Text.  Complete Lesson 1 worksheets 1 and 2 from the First Form Workbook.

Thursday, September 4: Memorize the 1st Conjugation imperfect tense endings and the vocabulary in Lesson 2 of the First Form Student Text.  Complete Lesson 2 worksheets 1 and 2 from the First Form Workbook.

Tuesday, September 8:Memorize 1st Conjugation future tense endings and the vocabulary from Lesson 3.  Complete Lesson 3, worksheets 1 and 2 in the Workbook. Also, make flashcards of all vocabulary words, and make sure that the Latin binder is organized.

Thursday, September 10: Review the 1st Conjugation, Present System and vocabulary in Lesson 4.  Be prepared for a quiz on this material!

Tuesday, September 15: Memorize the Present System (present, imperfect, future tenses) of sum from Lesson V. Complete Worksheets 1 & 2, Lesson Five (pp. 30).

Thursday, September 17: Review all vocabulary, warm-ups, and grammar forms in Lesson VI for the Test on Tuesday. Complete Worksheets 1, 2 & 3, Lesson 6 (pp. 34-35).  

Tuesday, September 22: Read Lesson VII (7) in the Student Text.  Complete Worksheets 2 3, up to Drill III in the Workbook.

Thursday, September 24: Read Lesson VIII (8) in the Student Text and memorize vocabulary. Complete Worksheets in the Workbook.

Tuesday, September 29: Complete Worksheet 3 from Lesson 1 and Worksheet 3 from Lesson 2.

Thursday, October 1st:

Tuesday, October 20: Read Lesson X (10) in the Student Text.  Make Flashcards of vocabulary. Do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 10 in the Workbook.

Thursday, October 22: Memorize Future Perfect Endings and vocabulary from Lesson X for quiz on Tuesday.  Do Lesson 9, Worksheet 4 and Lesson 10, Worksheet 4.

Tuesday, October 27: Review all vocabulary and all grammar forms (conjugations) for test on Thursday.

Thursday, October 29: Memorize the perfect system of sum, esse in Lesson XI (11) for quiz on Tuesday.  Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 11, in the Workbook.

Tuesday, November 3: Review all the forms and vocabulary in Lesson XII (12) in the Student Text.  Drill, drill, drill for the test on next Tuesday! Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 12, in the Workbook.

Thursday, November 5: Review all the forms, verbs, adverbs and sayings in Lesson XIII (13) in the Student Text for the test on Tuesday.  Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 13, in the Workbook.

Tuesday, November 10: Read Unit III introduction (p. 38). Memorize the cases and their uses.

Thursday, November 12: Read Lesson XIV; memorize the First Declension and vocabulary for quiz on Tuesday.

 

Tuesday, November 17: Memorize the two gender rules, and do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XIV (14) in the Workbook.

Thursday, November 19: Read Lesson XV (15). Memorize the 2nd Declension, masculine and the vocabulary for the quiz on Tuesday. Do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XV (15) in the Workbook.

Tuesday, November 24: Memorize the 2nd Declension Neuter and vocabulary from Lesson XVI (16).  Do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 16.

Tuesday, December 8: Flip the list of nouns given in class.  Continue to work on flashcards!

Thursday, December 10: Complete Worksheets 4 (exercise “Translation A” only) & 5, Lesson 17.

Tuesday, January 5: Memorize charts and vocabulary in Lesson XVIII (18) of the student text for quiz on Thursday.

Thursday, January 7: Do Worksheets  2 & 3, Lesson 18, in the Workbook.

 

Tuesday, January  12: snow day.

Thursday, January 14: Due to the snow day, the exam has been moved to next Tuesday (19).

For the exam, study all vocabulary and charts from Lesson I (1) through Lesson XVIII (18).  NB: Students will not be expected to know the contents of Lesson XVIV (19)!

Tuesday, January 26: Complete worksheets 3 & 4, Lesson XX (20), and review all vocabulary for vocabulary test on Tuesday.

Thursday, January 28: Review for vocabulary test on Tuesday!

Tuesday, February 2: Memorize the third conjugation and vocabulary from Lesson XXI (21).

Thursday, February 4: Prepare for quiz on the third conjugation, and catch up on any homework you are behind in.

Tuesday, February 9: Memorize vocabulary from Lesson XXII (22) for quiz on Thursday.  Pay especial attention to the gender of each word!

Thursday, February 11: Do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XXII (22) in the workbook.  Review all your flashcards!

Tuesday, February 16: Memorize the third declension neuter chart and vocabulary in Lesson XXIII (23) for quiz on Thursday. There will be a flashcard check on Thursday, so bring in your new cards (from Lesson 23) to class!

Thursday, February 18: Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XXIII (23) in the Workbook.  Review your flashcards!

Tuesday, February 23: Complete worksheet handed out in class.  Check your work when finished!  Review all flashcards.

Thursday, March 3: Review all flashcards, focusing on the 3rd declension nouns, masculine, feminine, and neuter.  There will be a test on the 3rd declension next Tuesday.  Complete worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XXIV (24).

Tuesday, March 8th: Continue to review all flashcards, focusing on the 3rd declension nouns, for the test on Thursday.

Thursday, March 10th: Complete accusative worksheet handed out in class and Worksheet 4, Lesson XXIV (24) in the workbook.

Tuesday, March 15: No homework assigned.

Thursday, March 17: Complete worksheet handed out in class.

Tuesday, March 22: Read Lesson XXV.  Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 25.  Make flashcards of all the vocabulary, and begin to memorize them.  There will be a flashcard check on Thursday, so bring in your new cards (from Lesson 25) to class!

Thursday, March 24: Memorize 4th declension chart and vocabulary from Lesson XXV (25).  There will be a quiz next Tuesday!

Tuesday, March 29: Complete worksheet handed out in class.  Do it carefully, because it will be graded as a quiz!

Thursday, March 31st: Review all flashcards diligently over break.

Tuesday, April 12: Read Lesson XXVI (26).  Make flashcards (these will be checked on Thursday).  Complete worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson 26. There will be a quiz on the vocabulary and grammar forms next Tuesday!

Tuesday, April 19th: Complete Worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XXVII (27). Review all flashcards and all declensions–there will be a declension test next Tuesday.

Thursday, April 21st: Worksheets 1, 2, & 3, Lesson XXVIII (28).  Review for the test, which has been moved to THURSDAY.

Tuesday, April 26th: Worksheet 4, Lesson XXVIII (28).  Review all declensions and nouns for test on Thursday.

Thursday, April 28th: Draw a picture with at least 15 nouns labelled in Latin.

Tuesday, May 3: Make a sheet of all nouns, arranged according to gender.

Thursday, May 6: Complete worksheet handed out in class.

Tuesday, May 10th: Read Lesson XXIX (29) and do worksheets 2 & 3.  There will be a quiz on vocabulary and the entire present system (2nd Conjugation) next Tuesday.

Thursday, May 12th: Read Lesson XXX (30) and do worksheets 2 & 3.  There will be a quiz on the vocabulary from Less. XXIX and the entire present system (2nd Conjugation) next Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 17: There will be a quiz on Tuesday on the vocabulary of Lesson XXX and all of Lesson XXXI.  Also, do worksheets 2 & 3, Lesson XXXI.

Thursday, May 19: There will be a quiz on Unit V (Lesson XXXIII) on Thursday.  Complete Worksheets 1, 2 & 3, Lesson XXXIII (33).
