The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a beautiful, unique approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Sacred Scripture, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an “atrium,” a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use to help them enter into a deeper relationship with God.
At Sacred Heart Academy, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is integrated into our Montessori and 1st-grade classrooms—students enrolled in those classes will participate in the program as part of their regular class time. In addition, we now offer a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for children not currently enrolled in the academy.
We currently offer two open sessions of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. One session meets on Tuesdays and the other on Thursdays, September through May, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Space is limited for this program.
The cost of the program for the year is $300 per child. Each family is also responsible for a $25 application fee. All children must be fully potty trained in order to participate.
In order to properly introduce children to the atrium, meetings of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will gradually increase in duration as the semester progresses according to the following schedule:
Week 1 – 45 minutes
Week 2 – 45 minute
Week 3 – 60 minutes
Week 4 – 75 minutes
Weeks 5 and following – 90 minutes
